Programming Announced!
dance: made in canada / fait au canada presents 12 artists from across Canada August 11 – 14, 2011, Betty Oliphant Theatre
Artistic Director Yvonne Ng, with guest curators Peggy Baker and James Kudelka, is excited to announce the programming for August 2011’s dance: made in canada / fait au canada (d:mic/fac). Over four days in August d:mic/fac will present 12 artists at the Betty Oliphant Theatre in Toronto.
The d:mic/fac MainStage Series will present a national spectrum of 7 cutting edge contemporary dance works on three programmes:
MainStage Programme – KUDELKA SERIES, curated by James Kudelka
* MOVE: The Company/Josh Beamish (Vancouver, British Columbia) performs “Tools for Cutting”, a quartet that examines men’s relationship with sporting equipment.
* Fila 13/ Lina Cruz (Montreal, Quebec)
Curator James Kudelka selected these choreographers because of the thematic link in their approach to looking within their own bodies as a source of inspiration and place to create movement that, when stylized, has created surreal landscapes.
MainStage Programme – MORRISON SERIES, curated by Yvonne Ng
* MACHiNENOiSY’s Dellia Brett and Daelik (Vancouver, British Columbia) bring “Self Less” to Toronto; a duet inspired by images and stories from survivors of the 2004 tsunami in South East Asia.
* Michael Caldwell (Toronto, Ontario) in a self-choreographed solo “Ash Unravel”.
Yvonne Ng curated these artists whose works are exploring identity and memories. This exploration is universally resonant – cultural identity is so heavily influenced by the media and external influences, there is great value in investigating personal history and family as it informs our lives in the present.
MainStage Programme – BAKER SERIES, curated by Peggy Baker
* Heidi Strauss and Darryl Tracy (Toronto, ON) perform the duet “La Lourdeur des Cendres” choreographed for them by Marie-Josée Chartier in 2003 as a Four Chambers dance project commission.
* Jung-Ah Chung (Victoria, BC) in “Excerpts from a Wet Summer” choreographed by D.A. Hoskins.
* Keiko Ninomiya (Toronto, ON) premieres the self-choreographed “kanan – kiri”, an interpretive exploration of the traditional Balinese dance style in which women perform in a male style; embodying – in balance – strength, power, coquettishness and charm.
Peggy Baker was drawn to the way each of these works highlight the artistry of the performers and their intricate, deeply woven relationship with their choreographers or culture.
Lottery-drawn Late Night Series What you See is What you Get
d:mic/fac will feature 5 local artists on the late-night programme, What you See is what you Get (WYSIWYG): Jasmyn Fyfe, Jannine Saarinen, Sylvie Bouchard, Robert Stephen, and Andrea Spaziani.
