dance: made in canada/fait au canada Festival (the “d:mic/fac Festival”) is the only Toronto- based biennial summer festival of contemporary dance. The not-for-profit festival was founded in 2000 by Artistic Director, Yvonne Ng and princess productions. The Festival Directors are Janelle Rainville, Jeff Morris and Yvonne Ng.
d:mic/fac Festival fills a mid-market niche by presenting culturally-diverse, independent dance artists, from established to emerging and from across Canada. Because of its multi-disciplinary nature, the festival is a popular choice for both seasoned art aficionados and new dance and dance on film and video audiences.
We are looking to program short (2 – 15 minutes) dance films, videos and documentaries that address the intersections of movement and media. Only films produced after February 2022 will be accepted.
Please note that we cannot offer feedback on submitted films, and only the selected applicants will be contacted. Complete film programming for the d:mic/fac Festival will be announced in June 2023.
While d:mic/fac Festival is foremost a live performance festival, its Arts Encounters programming, including the screening of dance films, has enjoyed increasing patronage over the last 10 years. The tickets for screenings at the Betty Oliphant Theatre will be on a sliding scale, while the online screenings will be free with registration.
This year, films will have 3 live in-person screenings at the Betty Oliphant Theatre, and 4 online screenings, which are available for a limited time. Applicants will be selected to be a part of one of these programmed events.
Rules & Terms
SUBMISSIONS PROCESS
The submissions period for films opens Thursday, March 2, 2023. All submissions to dance: made in canada must be made via FilmFreeway.
SCHEDULING
The scheduling of films is determined by the d:mic/fac Festival. The date(s), time(s), and location(s) of exhibitions of the films shall be at the sole discretion of the d:mic/fac Festival.
RUN TIME
As films must have a minimum running time of 2 minutes and a maximum running time of 15 minutes.
PRODUCTION DATE
Only films produced after February 2022 will be accepted.
HONOURARIUM
All screened films will receive an honourarium. Honourariums will be paid via e-transfer using the information in their account. Payment will be made within thirty (30) calendar days following the first screening of the film to which the honourariums relates.
CANADIAN CONTENT
To be eligible for consideration, films must be directed or choreographed or produced by a person that is a Canadian Citizen or a person that is a Permanent Resident of Canada (as defined under SC 2001, c. 27). Films must also list Canada as one of the countries of production.
SCREENING METHODS
Due to the continuing impact of COVID-19, d:mic/fac Festival may use alternative screening methods. We are committed to presenting dance on film and video in the best way possible for our artists and audiences. Screening methods will be confirmed on the Notification Date. All films must be eligible to be screened as part of both an in-person screening and online.
ACCESSIBILITY
d:mic/fac Festival will make reasonable efforts to present films which have accessibility features. Our capacity to do so is limited and may require coordination with applicants which include them in their films. Additionally, any applicant that requires accessibility accommodations to complete the submission form should contact the d:mic/fac Festival.
FORMAT
All final films must be available as .mov, .mp4 or .mpeg file format. In addition, DCP formatted films will be accepted for the in-person screenings. All other films will be converted to DCP for the in-person screenings.
I. APPLICATION OF THESE TERMS & CONDITIONS
The following terms and conditions (the “Terms”) govern the submission of a film (the “Film”) to dance: made in canada/ fait au canada (“d:mic/fac Festival”), through filmfreeway.com (“FilmFreeway”), for consideration in the festival. To the extent that this document is inconsistent with any other document prepared by d:mic/fac Festival or anyone else, this document will take precedence. II. SUBMISSION AGREEMENT
(1) By submitting a Film to d:mic/fac Festival for consideration, the submitter (the “Applicant”) represents that they have obtained consent from any and all owners, creators, choreographers, producers, and/or other authorized representatives of the Film whose consent is required to submit the Film to d:mic/fac Festival and screen the Film at the festival, and has read, understood, and agreed to the Terms.
(2) d:mic/fac Festival may disqualify or reject, but is not required to do so, any submission that it determines, in its sole and absolute discretion, is not in compliance, in whole or in part, with these Terms, and may do so without returning the Applicant’s submission.
III. SUBMISSION ELIGIBILITY
(1) To be eligible for consideration, films must be directed or choreographed or produced by a person that is a Canadian Citizen or a person that is a Permanent Resident of Canada (as defined under SC 2001, c. 27). Films must also list Canada as one of the countries of production. All other Films will not be considered for the festival.
(2) d:mic/fac Festival will accept submissions for a Film that has already premiered, but the Film’s premiere status will be taken into consideration when final programming decisions are made. d:mic/fac Festival has a curatorial bias towards Films that are, at minimum, Toronto premieres.
(3) A Film will be eliminated from consideration if:
a. the Film was previously submitted to dmic for Festival consideration. We will consider a Film that has undergone substantial changes since it was submitted for consideration. Substantial changes include, and are not limited to: editing, reshoots, or a new run time. If you are submitting a new cut of a Film that was previously submitted, please include a brief statement with your submission.
b. d:mic/fac Festival is unable to view the online screener
c. for any other reason at the sole discretion of d:mic/fac Festival
(4) All Films must be submitted as online screeners via FilmFreeway (as described below). All selected Films must be available to screen by Wednesday July 12th, 2023.
- PROCESS FOR SUBMISSION
Submission Procedure
(1) complete the registration process at FilmFreeway
(2) provide an online screener via FilmFreeway for review by dmic programming staff.
(3) test your online screeners before submitting and ensure the online screener remains active on FilmFreeway until August 31st, 2023. The Applicant has sole responsibility for ensuring that the submitted online screener plays in its entirety.
(4) d:mic/fac Festival will not review multiple versions of a submitted Film. Only the version that was received first will be considered. - SUBMISSION DEADLINES
(1) The deadline for 2023 is Monday, April 3rd, 2023 at 11:59 pm (EST) - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, LEGAL CLAIMS, AND INDEMNITIES
(1) By submitting the film to d:mic/fac Festival, the Applicant and Film Owners (the “Submitting Parties”) hereby warrant and represent that: (i) the Film is wholly original and is not copied from and does not include any other work that is the subject of copyright or other protection, unless such work is in the public domain or the Submitting Parties have obtained any and all consents, releases, licenses, and other authorizations or waivers of any kind necessary for the inclusion or reproduction of any person, character, location, thing, trademark, sound recording, musical composition, or other work in the Film; (ii) the Film does not defame any person or violate the common law or statutory rights, including, without limitation, the rights of privacy and publicity or any other right of any person; (iii) the Film is not the subject of litigation, nor any dispute which would give rise to litigation; (iv) there are no agreements, nor will there be any agreements made subsequent to the date of this Film submission, that would or could have the effect of impairing the Submitting Parties’ ability to provide the Film as contemplated herein, or otherwise conflict with any provision of these Terms; and (v) the Submitting Parties have the full right, power, and authority to submit the Film to d:mic/fac Festival for Festival consideration, and to grant all of the rights granted hereunder and in the FilmFreeway registration form, and there is no obligation or restriction which would in any way impair, limit, or impede the Submitting Parties from fully performing all obligations pursuant to the submission and these Terms.
(2) The Submitting Parties agree to indemnify and hold harmless d:mic/fac Festival, its licensees, successors, and assigns, and its and their members, officers, directors, employees, volunteers, agents, representatives, associates, and affiliates (each, a “Release”), from any claim, suit, action, or other proceeding brought against a Releasee and from any losses, costs, or damages, including the Releasee’s full legal fees and costs, which it may have suffered or incurred or may suffer or incur, directly or indirectly based on, in connection with, or arising from the use and exhibition of the Film submitted by the Applicant or the breach or alleged breach of any representation, warranty, or other agreement made by the Applicant in these Terms, or in the Applicant’s FilmFreeway registration form.
(3) By submitting a Film to d:mic/fac Festival, the Submitting Parties hereby release the Releasees from any and all liability in the event of theft, unauthorized access, or copying, or any breach of copyright of the submitted Film while it is in d:mic/fac Festival’s possession.
VII. OTHER
(1) d:mic/fac Festival reserves the right to rule, in its sole discretion, on cases and situations not foreseen by these Terms.
