dance: made in canada / fait au canada Festival presented its first off-year event in August 2014. ‘Light and Shadow’ provided a platform for dialogue between Light and Choreography. Lighting Designer, Arun Srinivasan facilitated two evening workshops for professional dance artists that focused on lighting design for contemporary dance.
The Winchester St. Theatre was the classroom. Workshop participants explored the collaborative and shared possibilities of how lighting in a dance work can affect the work’s artistic intent, mood and overall feeling, and as a result affect an audience’s interpretation. Participants also learned about various lighting fixtures, colour, texture, cuing and how these are applied to design. Workshops were practical and covered basic design skills, including how to approach a dance work, how to work within a festival scenario and how to communicate and work with designers. At the conclusion of the second workshop, each participant created their own lighting design for a dance work. Pam Briz, Iryna Gordon & Alison MacDonald’s ‘Silencio’ was used as a base work. Participant work was presented in the theatre for collective discussion.
The work culminated in a public presentation on Saturday, August 16 that the Winchester Street Theatre. Learn more HERE.
