During a nighttime visit to a museum, an unforeseen connection between a woman and a painting triggers an unexpected journey between the real and the unreal.

Lors d’une visite nocturne dans un musée, un lien insoupçonné entre une femme et une oeuvre d’art déclenchera un voyage inattendu entre le réel et l’irréel.

Director Statement:

La Galerie is the first fictional short film I have directed. Although it was originally a circus show, it was important for me to create a work in itself, a creation that transcends what is presented on stage, without it being an adaptation of the show. Working with the stage director and the entire Machine de Cirque team has proven to be most stimulating and has confirmed my desire to develop cinematographic projects in collaboration with the many artists in the living arts community in Québec City. My wish was to take people on a short but rich journey into a world that connects what is real to what is unreal, to make us look at the artwork differently. I wanted the appreciation of the paintings to be less rooted in understanding them and the historical context, but rather in the feelings we experience when we encounter them. First, I wanted the viewer to slowly enter and discover the singular world in which the characters evolve. The decision to film at night at the Museum was made with this in mind. Then, another part of the short film was shot in a church where I had to create a universe from scratch with my collaborators. We managed to strike a good balance in our representation of the museum’s artwork by transposing them into living art. La Galerie est le premier court-métrage de fiction que je signe en tant que réalisateur. Bien qu’au départ il s’agisse d’un spectacle de cirque, c’était important pour moi de créer une œuvre en soi, une création qui transcende ce qui est présenté sur scène, sans que ce soit une adaptation du spectacle. Le travail avec le metteur en scène et toute l’équipe de Machine de Cirque s’est avéré très stimulant et a confirmé mon envie de développer des œuvres cinématographiques en collaboration avec les nombreux artistes en arts vivants de Québec. J’avais comme désir, à travers la réalisation, de transporter les gens dans un court, mais riche voyage, dans un monde qui lie le réel au surréel, et qui nous ramène à observer les œuvres différemment. Je voulais que l’appréciation des œuvres soit moins ancrée dans la compréhension et le contexte historique, mais plutôt dans le ressenti qu’on éprouve face à celles-ci. Dans un premier temps, j’ai tenu à ce que le spectateur entre et découvre tranquillement le monde singulier dans lequel évoluent les personnages. Le choix de tourner de nuit au Musée était orienté en ce sens. Ensuite, une autre partie du court-métrage a été tournée dans une église où j’ai dû créer un univers de toute pièce avec mes collaborateurs. Nous sommes parvenus à un bon équilibre dans notre représentation des œuvres du musée en les transposant en art vivant.
